Testing
Our tests are used to determine your general health status, an important step in understanding your needs better
Blood Tests
Our initial test recommendations often include blood tests which can be done through our local pathology laboratories: Lancet, Ampath or Pathcare.
Depending on your medical aid scheme, these tests may be fully covered by medical aid. We recommend clarifying with your medical aid what is covered and what is not before you go for your blood work.
These tests are used to determine general health status, diseases screening, hormone levels, inflammatory status as well as routine tests such as cholesterol levels, glucose, iron studies, vitamin B12 levels and vitamin D.
Your doctor will select which tests are needed based on your health history and objectives.
Genetic Tests / Nutrigenomic Testing
Your body’s genes regulate and control several health processes from metabolism to inflammation and detoxification. It is now an outdated concept to consider the genes you were born as being the ‘hand of cards’ you were dealt in terms of propensity for health and diseases. Science now understands that environmental factors, the way we deal with stress, how we move our bodies and dietary factors all influence how certain genes behave. We have the ability to ‘switch on’ the more desirable genes and a way to ‘switch off’ the less desirable genes which can have a profound impact on health.
Understanding your genetic blueprint and how you can influence it in order to shape your health is a both a powerful and personalized health tool.
We work in collaboration with two excellent local DNA laboratories in the field of nutrigenomics:
We may recommend testing after consulting with you or you may be referred to us for interpretation of your test results and lifestyle recommendations based on them.
Specialized Functional Medicine Tests
The field of functional medicine testing is expanding rapidly. Patients are looking for deeper insights into the workings of their bodies. We work in collaboration with certain overseas laboratories that offer specialized panels of tests which may be of interest to some patients but are not necessarily done routinely. We are trained and skilled in the interpretation of these tests.
Hormone and hormone metabolite testing (urine and salivary measurements of adrenal and sex hormones including hormone metabolite testing.)
Comprehensive stool analysis (functional gut symptoms or conditions like IBS/IBD, SIBO and autoimmune diseases.)
Organic Acid panels – looks at vitamin, mineral, fatty acid (omega) markers and amino acid (protein building blocks) levels. Helps us to functionally assess the need for anti-oxidant support, digestive and immune support, mitochondrial health and amino acid-based therapies for a variety of health conditions.
Toxicity panels – looks at exposure to pesticides, herbicides, environmental pollutants and moulds.
